Advancing culturally rooted approaches to tribal education

At the National Conclave for Empowering Tribals through Voluntary Action in Bhopal, Shiv Kumar Gandhi, Program Director, Piramal Foundation, emphasised the need to move beyond a “one curriculum for all” approach and design learning that reflects tribal identities, cultural wisdom, and aspirations.

Inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Mohan Yadav, the conclave brought together government leaders, experts, and civil society to reimagine the future of tribal education in the state. The recommendation for a contextualised curriculum centred on indigenous art and sports—endorsed by the panel chaired by Swami Anuragananda—signalled strong alignment for reform.

The engagement reinforced ongoing efforts to support the Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, in strengthening 21st-century competency education across 30,000 schools, reaching 49 tribes and three Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.
