Listening to learners to shape compassionate classrooms in Jammu & Kashmir

A comprehensive baseline assessment was conducted with over 1,300 students across 60+ schools in 10 districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, examining Aesthetic Literacy, Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning), and core 21st-century competencies. The study aimed to understand students’ learning, emotional, and expressive needs in a holistic manner.

Beyond measurement, the assessment created space to listen to children’s voices and recognise what they need to learn, grow, and heal. Insights from the findings will inform focused teacher capacity-building, enabling schools to integrate arts, expression, emotional wellbeing, and compassionate practices into everyday classroom experiences.

This baseline marks a significant step towards system-level change in Jammu & Kashmir, strengthening an education ecosystem that nurtures resilience, creativity, and wellbeing. The effort was made possible through the active support of district officials, teachers, and school leaders across participating schools.
